Turkish firm builds five hospitals in Iraqi cities (TR)
Tuesday 29 June 2010
Turkey’s Acarsan Group will hand over five hospitals currently under construction to Iraq’s health ministry by 2012. The estimated total cost of the project stands at around $750 million.
Having been active in Iraq for 27 years, Acarsan has exported various goods to the country based on demand, including food, white goods and construction supplies. Since 1983, Iraq has been the biggest export market for Acarsan, which has taken an active part in the neighboring country’s economy.

Acarsan Group Chairman Selim Acar said the company was among the biggest exporters in Turkey, adding that it owned companies in various sectors such as food, automotive, tourism, motor vehicles, oil products, vehicle control stations and healthcare.

Through its joint venture with the Universal Hospitals Group, Acarsan has recently won a bid for infrastructure investments in Iraq.

“Now we are building hospitals in the south, which will operate under the Health Ministry. We started a year ago. Five hospitals are currently under construction in Basra, Karbala, Missan, Nasiriyah and Babil-Hilla provinces. Each hospital has a 400-bed capacity. The constructions will be finished by the end of 2011.”

Eyeing new bids
Acar said the firm was planning to make new bids in Iraq. “We are currently in discussion about some infrastructure investments there.”

The chairman said Turkish companies must take their place in the restructuring of Iraq, adding that terrorism in the country has declined considerably in the past few years. “There are risks in some regions, but the real challenge is being able to do business under severe conditions,” he said.

Turkey took the blow of the global recession relatively well compared to other countries, Acar said, adding that economic recovery began around May last year.

Hopeful about Acarsan’s growth this year, Acar said the firm would invest in the pasta industry in the southeastern province of Gaziantep in 2010. At the same time, it also plans to construct a Deutsche Krankenhaus (or German Hospital), a Universal Hospitals Group enterprise, in the province.

Acar also said the group will provide jobs for between 4,000 and 5,000 people in the following two or three months
